| Christine Meyer: Welcome and thank you to all of you for joining us in this webchat today! Today is the first day of International Education Week in the U.S. and in our missions around the world. This week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of our efforts to promote programs to attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States. We really have a full week of activities and I wanted to take a second to tell everyone what is happening. Tonight, at 9:15pm on Nile TV, the Director of the Binational Fulbright Commission in Egypt, Bruce Lohoff, will appear on the program "Open to Question" to discuss the Fulbright Scholarship program. Tomorrow night two alumni of our Near East and South Asia (NESA) exchange program will appear on the program "Mobashera from Cairo" at 10:00pm on Nile News to discuss their experiences studying in the U.S. As part of International Education Week, I and some of my embassy colleagues will also be visiting various universities in Egypt to meet with Egyptian students and talk about study abroad opportunities. We hope to see some of you there! I look forward to answering your questions here today.
مرحبا بكم وأشكركم جميعا على المشاركة فى هذا اللقاء . اليوم هو اول ايام احتفالنا بأسبوع التعليم الدولي فى الولايات المتحدة وفي سفاراتنا حول العالم . هذا الأسبوع هو فرصة للإحتفال بفوائد التعليم الدولي والتبادل على مستوى العالم . وهذه المبادرة التي طرحتها وزارة الخارجية الأمريكية بالتعاون مع وزارة التعليم الأمريكية هي جزء من جهودنا لتشجيع البرامج التي تجذب الشباب الذين سيصبحون قيادات المستقبل للدراسة فى الولايات المتحدة والإنضمام فى برامج تبادل فيها.
فهذا الأسبوع مكثف بالنشاط وأنا أريد أن أتخذ هذه الفرصة للإعلان عما سيحدث. الليلة سيتحدث السيد بروس لوهوف مدير الهيئة الثنائية فولبرايت بمصر فى برنامج "مفتوح للأسئلة " على قناة النيل الساعة التاسعة والربع مساء ، وهو سيتحدث عن المنح الذي تقدمها هيئة فولبرايت. وغدا سيتحدث اثنين من خريجي برنامج التبادل الطلابي للشرق الأدني وجنوب أفريقيا فى برنامج "مباشر من القاهرة"على قناة النيل للأخبار الساعة العاشرة مساء وسيتحدثان عن تجربتهما فى الدراسة فى الولايات المتحدة . كما سيتخلل الإحتفال بأسبوع التعليم الدولي أيضا أنني وزملائي فى السفارة الأمريكية سنزور عدة جامعات فى مصر للقاء الطلبة المصريين والتحدث اليهم عن فرص التعليم فى الخارج. وأنا آمل ان أرى بعضكم هناك. وأنا أتطلع الى الإجابة على أسئلتكم الآن. |

| Christine Meyer: Hello Ahmed, Thank you for your question. Congratulations on your high GPA! Requirements vary by university, so once you've found a program that is suitable for you, you can check with the school and see what the requirements are. |

| Christine Meyer: شكرا لسؤالك . هناك العديد من الفرص لإستكمال الدراسة فى الولايات المتحدة وهذه احدى الأشياء الممتازة فى نظام التعليم الأمريكي لأنه يتيح فرصة لكل شخص. من بعض مميزات نظام التعليم وجود فصول دراسية على الطريقة الأمريكية وهو تحاور الطلبة مع أساتذتهم . وجود الطلبة الدوليين فى حرم الجامعات الأمريكية مهم للغاية لآنهم يأتون بأفكار مختلفة ومعرفة جديدة. وحينما يعودون الى وطنهم يحملون معهم ذكريات وخبرات من الولايات المتحدة. |

Mohamed Ali : Thank you Ms. Christine for this nice chance of chating you, I asked if there is an index or calendar for the U.S embassy programs and Are these programs (as MEPI, NESA and Intensive English course program) completely free ? Or what does the embassy pay particularly ? thx |
| Christine Meyer: Hi Mohamed, Thank you for your question. Currently, all of the programs offered by the U.S. Embassy are free of charge to Egyptian participants. Although some programs are different, most cover international transportation from Egypt to the location in the U.S., lodging, a stipend for food, and usually a cultural stipend. New programs are posted at http://egypt.usembassy.gov/pa/xchgs.htm. The NESA program will be announced by the end of the week - so check back soon! In addition, for persons who are artistic, we will be posting a call for designs to design the New Year's greeting card for the Public Affairs Section. That will be advertised tomorrow on the same exchanges site http://egypt.usembassy.gov/pa/xchgs.htm. I think that this will be a fun competition - it is to design the New Year's greeting card for the Public Affairs Section. |

احمد خليل : لماذا تستبعدون طلاب جامعة الازهر من الالتحاق باجامعات الامريكية؟ يرجى العلم انى خريج كلية اللغات والترجمة جامعة الازهر واود الدراسة فى احدى الجامعات الامريكية من اجل تصحيح الصورة السيئة لدى الغرب تجاه المسلمين وايضا من اجل تصحيح صورة الغرب فى تظر العرب والمسلمين و شكرا جزيلا |
| Christine Meyer: عزيزي أحمد، الولايات المتحدة ترحب بجميع الطلبة من جميع الجامعات بما فيها جامعة الأزهر. فأحد خريجي برنامج الشرق الأدنى وجنوب أفريقيا للتبادل الطلابي هو طالب من جامعة الأزهر حاليا . وبالمناسبة فهو سيظهر في برنامج "مباشر من القاهرة" مساء الغد الساعة العاشرة على قناة النيل للأخبار ليتحدث عن تجربته فى الولايات المتحدة. وهناك أيضا طالبان من جامعة الأزهر يدرسان حاليا في الولايات المتحدة تحت نفس الرنامج، أحدهما في جامعة جاكسون والآخر في جامعة ويسكونسن لاكروس. أنا أعلم ان عملية تقديم الطلب يمكن ان تكون طويلة ولكن يمكنك ان تتحدث الى احد المستشارين المتخصصين فى التعليم الأمريكي مثل هيئة أميديست وهم خبراء ويمكن ان يساعدوك فى إيجاد البرنامج الأفضل لك. من الجيد ان لديك الرغبة فى الدراسة فى الخارج ولك مني أفضل التمنيات. |

| Christine Meyer: Dear Yasser, The Binational Fulbright Commission has a variety of post-graduate programs available that might be able to assist you. In addition, both Fulbright www.fulbright-egypt.org and AMIDEAST www.amideast.org/egypt have a program for teachers of English and Arabic to live and work in the U.S. for one academic year. These programs allow teachers to teach Arabic to American students, live with host families or apartments in the U.S. and experience U.S. culture first-hand. It is really a great program and I encourage you to learn more about it. |

Mriam : how ccould i study in US without having a lot of money? |
| Christine Meyer: Hello Miriam, Thanks for your question. I myself studied in the U.S. on a very small budget. It is not easy, but if you work hard, anything is possible! The first thing to do is to try to get financial aid. Sometimes it helps if you are already admitted to a university before you submit a request for financial aid. Also, sometimes you can take an internship which may or may not provide funding. You can check out our Facebook page, search "StudyUSA Egypt" where we have some scholarships listed. Also, check out the websites of some of the multi-national companies - some of them offer scholarships to students from Egypt and across the Middle East. In addition, http://EducationUSA.state.gov is an excellent resource for all. Best of luck! |

Hassan Naguib : انا خريج كلية هندسة جامعة الزقازيق و ادرس الماجستير فى هندسة القاهرة و اريد ان اكمل تعليمى الاكاديمى فى احدى الجامعات العالمية و لكن التكلفة باهظة جدا و مستحيل ان أخذ منح من الجامعات المصرية لاننى ليس معيد فيها.و المنح التعليمية من الجاهات الاخرى لاتتم بشيئ عادل فكيف لى ان التحق بأحدى الجامعات الامريكية و انا لا املك المال لهذا؟؟ هل يوجد قروض تعليمية من الجامعات الامريكية بحيث اتعلم ثم يأخذوا منى المال بعد التخرج على اقساط؟؟؟ ام ماذا افعل |

| Christine Meyer: Hi Mahmoud, Thanks for your question. The NESA UGRAD program is a really great program. Those of you who visit our Facebook page have probably seen postings from some of the NESA UGRAD alumni. Also, there are some You Tube clips of a few alumni being interviewed on local TV on the Facebook page. This program provided the participants not only with knowledge about their field of study, but information about what the U.S. is really like, and what it is like to live in a dorm, eat at the cafeteria and travel around. We'll be posting the application information soon and look forward to receiving your applications. محمد : قدمت طلب الا لتحاق بالمنحه التى قدمتها السفارة الامريكية بالقاهرة للحصول على فرصة دراسة اللغه الانجليزية فى حامعة نيبراسكا الامريكية ولكن الطلب قوبل بالرفض فما السبب على الرغم من انى قدمت اوراقى فى الوقت المحدد الطالب محمد وشكرا |
| Christine Meyer: شكرا على سؤالك وشكرا للتقدم لبرنامج اللغة الإنجليزية المكثف. لقد تلقينا العديد من الطلبات الممتازة ولكن للأسف لا نستطيع ان نأخذ العدد كله. بالرغم انني لا أستطيع ان أناقش طلبك بالذات إلا أننا نركز على ثلاث متطلبات أساسية وهي: درجات عالية في المدرسة ، مشاركة أجتماعية، وبعض اللغة الإنجليزية. فكثير من الطلاب الذين تقدموا كان لديهم هذه المتطلبات ولكن للأسف لا يمكننا مقابلتهم جميعا. إذا كنت مهتم بتحسين لغتك الإنجليزية فهناك العديد من الموارد الموجودة على الإنترنت .وعلى سبيل المثال يمكنك الدخول على موقع قسم اللغة الإنجليزية بالسفارة للإطلاع على بعض البرامج التي يمكن ان تفيدك http://egypt.usembassy.gov/pa/relo.htm وأتمنى لك التوفيق فى دراستك الإنجليزية. |

Dalia : dear sir, do u offer full scholarships for undergraduates? would u please tell me more about the Exchange Programs you organize? Is community service as important as high grades? I study English Literature and Interpretation at the university, do I have to take TOEFEL? How can I join your exchange programs? | Christine Meyer: Sorry about the delay - we had a internet problem, but now we are back and running! Dear Dalia, Thank you for your question. The Embassy offers 1 and 2 semester scholarships to study in the U.S. through the NESA UGRAD program. This program is for undergraduate students with good grades who are active in their communities and have leadership potential. The first step to joining this or any other Embassy program is to apply! I suggest that you apply early for any program you are interested in. By applying early, you will have a chance to submit any documents you might miss the first time though. Some programs require TOEFL and some do not, so you will have to check the different applications. Best of luck! |

| Christine Meyer: أشكرك على السؤال، إن علوم الحاسب ونظم المعلومات من أهم مجالات الدراسة فى الولايات المتحدة حيث يوجد أفضل البرامج بها. ولكل جامعة فى الولايات المتحدة نظامها الخاص لقبول الطلاب الجدد، ما عليك الا ان تتحقق من نظام الجامعة التي تريد أن تلتحق بها لترى ما هي متطلباتها. عامة، تطلب الجامعة نماذج طلبات و مؤهلاتك ونتيجة إختبار التويفيل ومعظم مدارس تطلب ايضا خطابات تزكية أو مقالات.وما عليك الا ان تتأكد من تاريخ انتهاء تقديم الطلبات للجامعة التي ترغب الإلتحاق بها حيث تختلف المواعيد من جامعة لأخرى. |

I am currently a student in the open University in cairo, faculty of arts, English branch; and iam wondering, if i would have the opportunity to get a schoolarship through the Binational Fulbright programs. taking in mind, i have applied for the US green lottery before, and i have two relatives lives in the US right now. | Christine Meyer: Hello Mohamed, The Embassy offers many different programs, and sometimes they change from year to year. The Near East and South Asia Undergraduate Exchange program will be announced this week. This program is for a year or semester of study in the U.S. Also, we anticipate that the MEPI Summer Institutes for Leadership will take place as well. Afaf El_Saghir : Dear Chris, I wanted to ask about the kids if they can be enrolled in a school in the U.S, if we immigrated during the month of Jan., will they still be able to continue for the second semester. Another issue, will they still can be enrolled in the same grades as in Egypt, one of the is at the 10th grade, the other is at the 7th grade |
| Christine Meyer: Dear Afaf, Best of luck to you in the U.S. Every school district in the U.S. has a bit of a different system. I suggest that you contact the school district administrator of the city in which you will be living. They should be able to answer your specific and general questions about your children's schooling in the U.S. |
