Moderator : Dear Friends, Thank you for joining us for today's chat. We have received a record number of questions already. We are very excited to see so much interest in studying in the United States and we hope this chat will be helpful to you. We have one hour for this chat so we will try to get to as many questions as possible. Many questions are on similar topics so if we can't answer your question specifically, hopefully you will find the answer in our answer to another question. And, of course, you can always come to the EducationUSA Fair on Wednesday, April 9 at the Sofitel Gezira Hotel. Our EducationUSA staff as well as representatives from eleven U.S. universities, AMIDEAST, Fulbright and the Institute for International Education will be available to meet with you and answer all of your questions. For more information, see http://egypt.usembassy.gov/webchat/edufair.htm. Again, thank you for your many questions and your interest. We are so happy that you are interested in studying in the U.S. Now, let's start the chat. |
| Kristen Cammarata: Hi Everyone! Thanks for taking the time to log on today and asking questions about studying in the US. As you know, US universities welcome students from countries all over the world. The application process can seem long and time consuming but we have two offices here in Egypt to help guide students. We hope to see you at the fair on Wednesday! |

| Kristen Cammarata: Hi Mostafa, There is no guaranteed funding but there ARE opportunities for funding for doctors to do their residencies in the US. Sounds like you are on the right track! When you successfully complete the USMLE Step 1, visit AMIDEAST Cairo or the American Center in Alexandria. They do general sessions every month on medical education. |

Monzer : I am a palestinian and I live in Egypt. Indeed, I am looking for a full scholarship which can fund my MBA degree in American unisersity where I can not finance myself. Is that avialable? |
| Kristen Cammarata: Dear Monzer, As an MBA is a professional degree US universities rarely offer scholarships for MBA programs. A few of the more competitive schools offer loans to international students but these schools require superior GMAT scores and impressive 3-5 years of work experience. Please visit our EducationUSA center in Cairo or Alex for more information if you meet these two requirements. |

mai : I'm a student at the 2nd grade at the faculty of economics and political science, english section, statistics department.I wanna know if there is any chance for undergraduate students to study in the US? |
| Kristen Cammarata: Hello Mai! International students can apply to US universities as transfer students. However, there are very few scholarships for transfer students so I think you are better off finishing your first degree here in Egypt and considering a MA in the US. Now is the time to start working on the MA applications- ensuring you have good grades, test scores, are involved in community groups, demonstrate leadership experience....you get the idea. What can you start doing now to be able to submit a solid MA application. |

| Kristen Cammarata: Hi Said, Thank you for your question. I should first say to be eligible for a scholarship, you should have superior grades, TOEFL, GRE and work experience. You are competing with the best and the brightest from around the globe. Get involved in your community and demonstrate leadership and initiative. If you believe you meet the criteria, then you can move on to the next step. For all assistance with choosing a program to apply to and the application process, please visit our EducationUSA centers in AMIDEAST Cairo and the American Center in Alexandria. You can begin by visiting www.petersons.com and do a search under graduate studies for all of the psychology programs offered in the US. Each program and the requirements are different so you should look for 5- 6 programs that might meet your needs and where your interest and expertise might be attractive to the department. For assistance in determining your eligibility and for help on the application process visit EducationUSA. |

Ahmed : I wanna study in usa and i'm sending to insituite in ohio and gives me some details , But i need to know how i can take visa for education ... |
| Kristen Cammarata: Hi Ahmed, First, you need to research each school you apply to in order to determine if it is a good match. The application process (if correctly done takes 12-18 months) should not be taken lightly. In the US, we apply, we don’t register. If you have been accepted to an accredited school and demonstrate that you have chosen an appropriate school for what you want to study and how it will help you when you return to Egypt and have the correct finances, then you should apply for a student visa.

Monzer : Hi, In would love to know some information about the 14 university that will make fair in Sofital El-Gezera in April 9th. I respectfully thank you for the answers, Monzer newmonzer@hotmail.com 012.445.8614 |
| Kristen Cammarata: Hello again Monzer! Please take the time to look at all of the schools posted on the embassy website to see if they have graduate programs that fit your interests. There are very few scholarships for MBA programs as they are professional degrees (more money for research!) but a few universities may offer loans. Visit mba.com for more information. |

The 14 US universities who are coming to the US do not have pharmacy and medicine and we want to make sure that their time in Cairo is efficiently spent and that they meet students who might be a good fit for them with the programs they have to offer. If you are interested in medicine or pharmacy make sure to attend a special group session at the EducationUSA centers in AMIDEAST Cairo or the American Center in Alexandria. |

sherif : hello, I am a student in faculty of engineering and I was wondering how can i get a scholarship opportunity to do my masters in the usa though my grades are not great? and can I take another major but not start from freshmen year. thanks |
| Kristen Cammarata: Hello Sherif, Scholarships in the US are very competitive as they are open to students from all over the world. What can you do to improve your grades or retake subjects that you might not have done well in? You could apply to a MA program in a different field if you could demonstrate that you have the grades and experience to make you a valued contributor to that university or department. Good luck! |

Mona Badran : Would I be able to hold a part time job in order to sustain he daily expenses of living? |
| Kristen Cammarata: Hi Mona, Good question! It depends on if you are a graduate student receiving a living stipend from the university which is provided for research or teaching assistants. International students are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week on campus (a little more in the summer) but this is not enough to pay for tuition or room and board. It would cover books and spending money. Good luck! |
| 06/04/2008 03:44:17 م

nesma : should i first start contacting the univerisities and when accepted go and look for a scholarship |
| Kristen Cammarata: Hi Nesma, Excellent question. For a BA, you MUST fill out the International Student Financial Aid form and submit at the time of application. For a MA/PhD you must apply for a scholarship at the time of application. One should NEVER apply, get accepted and then look for funding. If you apply and do not indicate the need for funding, the university automatically assumes you have the necessary funds. Visit our centers for advice!!! |
| 06/04/2008 03:54:08 م
nesma : what are the top universities rated internationally in the field of economics and quantitative analysis |
| Kristen Cammarata: Hi again Nesma, We don't rank universities at EducationUSA. One school might be perfect for one student and totally wrong for another student. For a list of which schools offer which fields, start with www.petersons.com and look under Graduate Programs. It is important to look through the university and department web site to learn about the different offerings and focus of each program. Best of luck! |

Samy : I am a graduate student from Al-Azhar University in Cairo. I got my BA Islamic Studies in English with grade of 'Excellent'. However, I find a great difficulty to join any American University or find any suitable sholarship to fund my postgraduate studies. Interestingly, Netherlnd and Uk become the most attractive places for such academic studies because they offer generous funding for this specialized and strategic area. So, why do American Univesities aviod academic interaction in this field? |
| Kristen Cammarata: Dear Samy, I am not aware of American universities avoiding interaction in any field. Indeed, a Google Scholar search reveals a lot of interesting work going on in your specific field. A graduate student must demonstrate in his/her application how his/her work has a place in the department and will make a valuable contribution to the scholarly work of the field. I do know that the UK and the Netherlands offer generous fellowships but the US continues to be the world leader for funding spent on university research. I encourage you to visit www.petersons.com or the Middle East Studies Association website at www.mesa.org to find out which universities and professors are doing work which might be a good match for your interests. And thank you for your interest in studying in the US! |
