Exchange Programs:
Central to Embassy public diplomacy activities are academic, educational, citizen, arts, and professional exchange programs. Partnering with the Fulbright Commission and AMIDEAST, we regularly conduct Citizen Exchanges, the Undergraduate Scholarship Program, and the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) study, business, legal and democracy exchange programs.

Our largest exchange program is the International Visitor Program which sends scores of Egyptians to the U.S. each year for two to three week professional tour of the United States.



Exchange Opportunities for Students
The Fulbright Student Program

The Fulbright Program promotes leadership development, the study of languages, and the development of international expertise in a wide range of fields among recent graduates, graduate students, and developing professionals and artists. The Program equips future leaders with the skills to thrive in an increasingly global environment by pursuing an academic year of career-launching study or research abroad.

The Near East & South Asia Undergraduate Scholarship Program (NESA)

NESA fosters cross-cultural exchange and mutual understanding between young emerging leaders in the Near East/ South Asia and the United States (U.S.) Grantees receive scholarships to pursue non-degree undergraduate study in the U.S.

Eligibility: Egyptian students in their first, second, and third year of undergraduate study or final year of secondary school with demonstrated leadership and minimum TOEFL-ITP score of 500.

Middle East Partnership Initiative Student Leaders Institutes Program

The MEPI Student Leaders Institutes Program provides opportunities for young university leaders from the Middle East and North Africa to participate in a

summer intensive leadership training program in the U.S. The course also aims to deepen the participant’s understanding of U.S. culture and society.

Eligibility: Egyptian students in their first, second, and third year of undergraduate study with demonstrated leadership and English proficiency.

Duration of Program: Five weeks , summer-intensive

Study of the United States Institutes (SUSI) for Student Leaders Program

Hosted by academic institutions throughout the United States, the Student Leader Institutes include an intensive academic component, an educational study tour to other regions of the country, local community service activities, and a unique opportunity to get to know American peers.

Eligibility: Egyptian students in their first, second, and third year of undergraduate study with demonstrated leadership and English proficiency.

Duration of Program: Four to six weeks, summer-intensive

Community College Initiative (CCI)

The Community College Initiative offers educational opportunities, professional development, and exposure to American society at U.S. Community Colleges for young Egyptians between the ages 20 and 30 who have completed a secondary – technical or general - degree. Grant duration may range from one to two years and will result in either a “Certificate” or an “Associate Degree”, respectively.

Exchange Opportunities for Youth

Youth Exchange and Study (YES)

YES provides scholarships for high school students (15-17 years) to spend up to one academic year in the U.S. Students live with host families, attend high school, engage in activities to learn about American society and values, acquire leadership skills, and help educate Americans about their countries and cultures.

Exchange Opportunities for Scholars and Artists


Fulbright Scholar Program

The Fulbright Program offers lecturing/research awards to college and university faculty and administrators, and professionals from business and government, as well as artists, journalists, scientists, lawyers, and independent scholars.

Study of the United States Institutes (SUSI)– Scholar Institutes Program

Scholar Institutes are designed to strengthen curricula and improved quality of teaching about the United States overseas. Participants interact with American scholars, meet with experts in their disciplines, visit civic institutions and explore the diversity and culture of the United States. Programs are offered on American Civilization, American Politics and Political Thought, Contemporary American Literature, U.S. Foreign Policy, Journalism and Media and Religious Pluralism.

Eligibility: Highly-motivated and experienced professionals from institutions of higher education. Ideal candidate should be an experienced professional, whose home

institution is seeking to introduce aspects of U.S. studies into its curricula, to develop new courses in the subject of the institute, to enhance and update existing courses on the United States, or to offer specialized seminars/workshops for professionals in U.S. studies areas related to the program theme.

MEPI – Civic Education and Leadership Fellowship

Provides Egyptian university teachers and scholars the opportunity to participate in a tailored program at the Maxwell School for Public Affairs at Syracuse University in New York.

Eligibility: The program is designed for Egyptian university educators and scholars.

Duration of Program: 5 months

Iowa International Writer’s Program

It is a ten-week residency program in Iowa University for international writers participating in cultural exchange activities in the fields of writing, translation, and artists.

Eligibility: The program is designed for established and emerging creative writers: poets, fiction writers, dramatists, and non-fiction writers.

Kennedy Center Cultural Visitors Program

The program offers professional development opportunities to emerging performing artists. The visitors will participate in classes and workshops in their genre, attend meetings with influential U.S. artists and companies, and watch performances in their genre and other genres.

Eligibility: Emerging performing artists between the ages of 19 and 30.

This program offers professional development opportunities to individuals working in the field of arts management.

Exchange Opportunities for Teachers

Secondary School Educators Institutes Program (SUSI) for Seconday School Educators

Secondary School Educators Institutes provide secondary educators with a deeper understanding of U.S. society, education, and culture, past and present. The pro-grams are organized around a central theme or themes in U.S. civilization and have a strong contemporary component.

Eligibility: Highly-motivated , experienced secondary school educators. Ideal candidate

can be a secondary teacher, teacher trainer, curriculum developer, textbook writer, or

ministry of education official Duration of Program: 6 weeks

Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (TEA)

The program brings outstanding secondary teachers to the United States to further develop expertise in their subject areas, enhance their teaching skills, and increase their knowledge about the United States. Eligibility: Secondary-level, full-time teachers with five or more years of classroom experi-ence in either English as a Foreign Language, Social Sciences (social studies, civics, history, or geography) or Math and Sciences

This program brings outstanding secondary teachers from the Near East, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, and Latin America to the United States for a semester-long to further develop expertise in their subject areas, enhance their teaching skills, and increase their knowledge about the United States.

Eligibility: Secondary-level, full-time teachers with five or more years of classroom experi-ence in either English as a Foreign Language, Social Sciences (social studies, civics, history, or geography) or Math and Sciences

Duration of Program: Semester-long graduate course including 8 week internship

Exchange Opportunities for Professionals


Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program

The Humphrey Program provides a year of professional enrichment and non-degree graduate-level study in the United States for accomplished mid-level professionals from designated countries that have a wide range of development needs.

International Visual Arts Journalism Summer Institute


The program is designed to enhance the ability of audiences to make in-formed critical judgments and assessments of American art of the past 150 years. The National Endowment for administers the program to improve the quality and quantity of coverage and criticism of certain specific arts disciplines

Eligibility: Journalists, writers or educators who have substantial experience in reporting on, or critiquing the visual arts with fluency in English.

FORTUNE/State Department Global Women’s Mentoring Program

FORTUNE Most Powerful Women Summit and the U.S. State Department established the Global Women’s Mentoring Partnership in May 2006. This public-private partnership places talented, emerging women leaders from all over the world in mentoring programs with FORTUNE’s Most Powerful Women Leaders. The program includes a three-day orientation in Washington, DC, where the participants meet with senior women in government, academia and business. The international partici-pants are then paired with one of FORTUNE’s Most Powerful Women Leaders for an ap-proximately three-week mentorship assignment in cities across the United States.

During the three weeks, American and international participants work together in mentor-ing relationships to share the skills and experiences necessary for strengthening women’s leadership. Each participant will have the opportunity to shadow a senior executive and engage in activities specifically designed by the company to meet the needs and interests of the participant. The program then concludes with a two-day debriefing in another U.S. city.

Eligibility: Emerging self-motivated women leaders in the business and non-profit sectors between the ages of 28 and 43 with a good command of English. Women who run their own businesses, work in the middle/middle-upper management of a non-U.S.-based corporation or non-profit organization, or women who run business associations, foundations or non-governmental organizations. MEPI - Leaders for Democracy Fellowship Program

Provides young civic and democratic reform leaders from the Middle East and North Africa with the opportunity to complete academic coursework, participate in practical, skill-building experiences, and network with like-minded reformers and activists inside and outside the region.

Eligibility: The program is open to applicants between the ages of 25 and 40 with a bachelor's degree and English language fluency to function successfully in an American academic and professional environment. Applicants also should have five years of work experience, as well as leadership skills and the capacity to apply the opportunities presented by the fellowship in a way that would benefit an organization, sector, or specific community.
