Cairo, Egypt— U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Education and Cultural Affairs Dina Habib Powell will visit Cairo December 5-6, 2006. She will be consulting on bilateral issues related to education and culture and meeting with alumni of U.S. Government exchange programs. A/S Powell recently returned from Asia with Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings and a delegation of university presidents, all of whom delivered the message that the United States continues to welcome foreign students.
On December 6, 2006, Assistant Secretary Powell will deliver keynote remarks at the AMIDEAST symposium entitled “Egyptian Education and Training for the Global Economy.” Her visit coincides with the 50th Anniversary Celebration of AMIDEAST, an American not-for-profit organization that shares the U.S. Government’s commitment to educational exchange, training, and workforce development in the Middle East.
Assistant Secretary Powell was born in Cairo, Egypt. She was nominated by President George W. Bush to be Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs on April 29, 2005, and was confirmed by the United States Senate on June 24, 2005. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has also designated her as Deputy Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs.
Assistant Secretary Powell leads the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), the team that administers many U.S. exchange programs, including the Fulbright Scholarship Program, the International Visitor Leadership Program, the Youth Exchange and Study Program, the Humphrey Fellowship Program and the Gilman Study Abroad Scholarship Program.
Assistant Secretary Powell also manages ECA cultural programs, including the Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation. Under her leadership, ECA has created several new innovative exchange programs including The Edward R.
