القاهرة – تحدثت السفيرة الأمريكية مارجريت سكوبي البارحة إلى أحدث دفعة من الطلبة المشاركين في برنامج منحة القيادة في التعليم والتنمية (LEAD)الذي يقدم منحا دراسية لعدد 54 طالبا وطالبة من خريجي المدارس الحكومية المصرية بالجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة. يقوم البرنامج على أساس المشاراكة بين وزارة التعاون الدولي المصرية والهيئة الأمريكية للتنمية الدولية والجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة في اختيار طالب وطالبة من كل من محافظة سنويا على أساس معايير شاملة تتضمن التفوق الدراسي والخدمات المجتمعية والمهارات الرياضية والفنية. ويساعد البرنامج الطلبة على تنمية المهارات القيادية التي تؤهلهم للحياة العملية والمشاركة الفعالة في مجتمعاتهم وفي عملية التنمية في مصر.

أشكر كثيرا السيد أرنولد رئيس الجامعة والسيدة سهير سعد لإستقبالي هنا الليلة ودعوتي لمشاركتكم مع هذه النخبة من الضيوف من أساتذة الجامعة والأصدقاء وطلبة البرنامج من الدفعات 1 الي 5.

كدت أضيع هذه الفرصة نظرا لمشكلة بسيطة حدثت فى مكتبي فقد فقدنا الدعوة ووجدناها فقط بالأمس. وأنا أردت بشدة الحضور الليلة لأن البرنامج بالفعل من البرامج التي أفتخر بها كثيرا وهو يعكس مساندة الولايات المتحدة لهذا الجهد الذي تقومون به. فقد قضت الولايات المتحدة سنين عديدة فى تنفيذ برامج مختلفة فى مصر لدعم التنمية الإقتصادية والتعليمية والصحية لكن لابد أن أقول أن من بين كل هذه البرامج التي أنجزناها أنا أفضل شخصيا هذا البرنامج وسأذكر لكم الأسباب. أعتقد ان رئيس الجامعة أرنولد ذكر بعض خصائص هذا البرنامج.

أولا، البرنامج يتم فى الجامعة الأمريكية وهي مؤسسة فريدة من نوعها وأعتقد أنها تعكس أفضل ما في مصر وأفضل ما فى الولايات المتحدة معا. فهي مؤسسة بنيت على أساس احترام التعليم والثقة فى المستقبل مع الوعي بأن إعداد الطلبة الشباب فى هذه الجامعة سيساهم ليس فقط فى مصر بل أيضا فى العديد من بلدان المنطقة التي التحقت بهذه المؤسسة العريقة.

والجامعة ايضا هامة لما أراه من نتائج مبهرة متمثلة فيكم. لقد حققتم الكثير بالفعل من نجاحاتكم الأكاديمية وقد رأينا من الدفعات السابقة كيف تحققون النجاح فى برنامج LEAD. وأنا أتطلع الى سماع أخباركم على مدار السنة وبعد تخرجكم، فأنا ليس لدي شك أنكم جميعا ستنجحون فى الجامعة الأمريكية، فأنتم كالكتاب الذي نتطلع أن نقرأ فيه الفصول القادمة حين تستكملون الدراسة هنا ثم تنتقلون الى الدراسات الأخرى أو العمل فى اي من المجالات المختلفة. فأنتم حقيقة واضحة وأنتم تمثلون كل أنواع الإستثمار الذي يمكن لأي أحد أن يحدثه فى هذه البلد، فالإستثمار فيكم له عائد أعتقد أنه الأهم على الإطلاق. لذلك كما قلت فإنه ببساطة أحد أفضل البرامج التي ننفذها.

ستقدم لكم الجامعة الأمريكية تجربة قريبة بعض الشئ من تجربة الدراسة فى الولايات المتحدة ولكنها تجربة فى داخل بلادكم وداخل مجتمع طلابي دولي وهي فرصة حقيقية للنمو والتعليم. لذا فأنا أتطلع لسماع قصص نجاحاتكم فيما سوف تفعلونه في السنوات القادمة.

أنا أعتقد أن سنوات الدراسة فى الجامعة هي أفضل سنوات العمر. فأنتم تتحملون مسئولية واحدة وهي تعليم أنفسكم. وأعتقد ان برنامج الجامعة الأمريكية يركز على نقطتين رئيسيتين هما: خلق طلبة ناجحين أكاديميا يتقنون المادة المدروسة ثم يكملون الدراسات العليا او يختارون العمل كما قلت. والهدف الثاني خلق قيادات تعرف كيف تساهم فى مجتمعاتها وبلادها.

أود أن أقدم نصيحة صغيرة لكم ، فبينما تنظرون حولكم الليلة تجدون زملاء يجلسون على نفس المائدة. أنا واثقة أن الثروة الحقيقية أن تكونوا صداقات مع زملائكم خلال الأربع سنوات التي ستقضونها هنا‘ فسوف تتصلون بهم بعد 30 عاما من الآن، وربما يكون أحد منكم فى بلد والآخر فى بلد آخر وربما يكون عملكم مختلف تماما ولكني متأكدة أنكم ستشتركون فى نفس الشبكة من العلاقات ونفس المجموعة المتضامنة. فبينما تكونون عائلات ووظائف وتقابلون تحديات مستقبلية فإنكم ستكونون شبكة العلاقات . وأعتقد ان ما ستحققونه من إنجاز هنا كأفراد وكذلك كمجموعة هنا فى الجامعة الأمريكية سيكون تجربة رائعة وستتمتعون أيضا بالرياضة وغيرها من النشاطات الإجتماعية فى الجامعة وهذا جزء يعادل ما تتعلمونه في العملية الأكاديمية.

أنا أشجعكم أن تتخذوا هذه الفرصة للأستفادة من تجربتكم بالجامعة الأمريكية بالكامل ، وأنا أعتقد أنه من الجيد أنكم بدأتم فى الحرم القديم وستنتقلون الى المبنى الجديد للجامعة، وسنراقب تقدمكم بكل دعم وإنتباه. وأنا أتطلع أن أستمع الى انجازاتكم فى نهاية العام.

Cairo – Ambassador Scobey addressed the newest generation of participants in the Leadership in Education and Development (LEAD) scholarship program, which provides scholarships to 54 Egyptian public school students to study at the American University in Cairo (AUC). The program is a partnership between the Ministry of International Cooperation, USAID and AUC. Two students, one male and female, from each governorate are selected annually based on comprehensive selection criteria including academic achievement, community service, as well as contributions to arts and sports. Through the program, the students develop leadership skills to enhance their careers and to participate actively in their communities and in Egypt’s development.

Ambassador Scobey: Thank you very much President Arnold and Ms. Saad for welcoming me here tonight and for inviting me to join you with these very distinguished guests, both of faculty and friends of the university and the LEAD students from cohorts 1-5. Through a glitch in my office I almost didn’t know about this. We had misplaced the invitation and only found out about it yesterday. And I said no, no I really, really want to go to this because it is truly one of the programs of which I am most proud, about the U.S. support for this endeavor that you are undertaking. The U.S. has spent many years in numerous different projects in Egypt promoting economic, educational and health development, but I have to say that of all the programs that we have done, my own personal favorite is this program and I’ll tell you why. I think some of elements or characteristics of this program have already been mentioned by President Arnold.

First of all, it takes place in AUC, which is quite a unique institution and I think reflects the best of Egypt and the best of the United States. It is an institution built upon respect for education and confidence in the future knowing that the preparation of young students in this university would contribute not only to Egypt but to the many countries in the region that have attended this university over the past very distinguished decades of its existence. It’s also important because from my point of view you all are very concrete results. One can see you.

You’ve already achieved much by your academic success. We’ve seen by your contacts and cohorts from previous LEAD programs how successful you will be. I will look forward as the academic year progresses, as graduations start coming up, to hearing about what you are going to do next. I have no doubt you all will be successful at AUC. And you are like a book. We’re trying to see what the next chapter will bring when you complete your studies here and go on either to further education or to careers in any variety of fields. You are concrete, you are real and of all the kinds of investments I think that anyone can make in their country, making an investment in you is going to pay off I think in the most important ways. So as I said, I think that it is simply one of the most important things that we do.

AUC will provide you in some ways a similar experience to an education in the United States, but one conducted in your own home, but with an international student body and a real opportunity to grow and to learn. So I look forward to hearing about your successes to find out what you’ll be doing in the years to come.

I think that the undergraduate years are the best years of your life. You have one responsibility, which is to educate yourself. I think that the AUC program has two main focal points: to create successful academic performers who will master their subject matter and go on as I said to further studies or to their careers and to create leaders; leaders who will know how to contribute to their communities and to their country.

My word of advice is that as you look around tonight, the people you are sitting with at the table. One of the real treasures of your four years here, I am certain, will be the friendships that you make with your fellow students. You will be calling them 30 years from now. One of you may be in one country, one in another. You may be in vastly different careers, but I guarantee that this will be your network, this will be your support system. Through families and jobs and careers and future challenges, this is your network and I think that what you will accomplish not only as individuals, but as a great team here at AUC will be an incredible experience and you will have fun I am certain in sports and in other extracurricular activities of the university. And those are just as much a part of your education as what you learn for the examination process.

So I can only urge you to absolutely take full advantage of AUC and its experience. I think it’s great that you’re starting off in the old campus and you’ll be moving to the new campus. We will be watching you with great support and great attention to your success. And I will look forward to hearing what you have accomplished by the end of the year. Thank you very much for having me here.
