نظمت السفارة الأمريكية بالقاهرة بالتعاون مع الإتحاد القومي لكرة السلة الأمريكية (NBA) والإتحاد المصري لكرة السلة ورشة عمل يوم 24 أغسطس 2008 مع لاعبي كرة السلة المصريين تحت 14 و18 عاما وذلك بالمركز الأوليمبي بالمعادي.

وقال السيد بروكس ميك، مدير البرامج الدولية بالإتحاد القومى لكرة السلة الأمريكية (NBA): "نحن نشعر أننا نستطيع التوسع فى لعبة كرة السلة عن طريق تعليم الأطفال والشباب وتحضيرهم ليختاروا اللعبة. ولتحقيق هذا الهدف نعقد المعسكرات وورش العمل التي تلهم الشباب للعب كرة السلة جيدا. وتتم دعوة 3 أو 4 من صغار اللاعبين المصريين كل عام لحضور معسكر "كرة السلة بلا حدود".

وخلال زيارته للقاهرة التقى السيد بروكس ميك بالسيد صابر حسنين مدير الإتحاد المصري لكرة السلة وناقشوا العديد من الأفكار لدعم التعاون بما فى ذلك المشاركة فى بناء ملاعب عامة لكرة السلة. وحسب قول السيد ميك "إننا في الإتحاد القومي لكرة السلة الأمريكية نرى مصر كدولة استراتيجية نظرا لموقعها فى قارة أفريقيا وكذلك فى الشرق الأوسط ، وهما منطقتان حددهما الإتحاد ضمن المناطق المرشحة المؤهلة لتنمية لعبة كرة السلة."

Cairo – On August 24, the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, in partnership with the American National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Egyptian Basketball Federation, organized a basketball clinic for Egyptian boys and girls (14-18 years old) at the Olympic Center in Maadi.

Brooks Meek, Director of International Programs for the NBA said, “We feel we can grow basketball through teaching young kids and developing young kids to choose the game of basketball, and we do that by having different camps and clinics to inspire youth to play the game and play it well. With Egypt we reward 4 or 5 of these young players every year to come to our Basketball without Borders camp.”

While in Cairo, Meek also met with Mr. Saber Hassanien, Director of the Egyptian Basketball Federation. They discussed a range of ideas for possible cooperation, including a partnership for the construction of public basketball courts. According to Meek, “the NBA sees Egypt as a strategic country because it is located in Africa and also located in the Middle East. These are the two areas that we have identified where basketball growth has a lot of potential.”
