في إطار برنامج "الطريق إلى البيت الأبيض" الذي تنظمه السفارة الأمريكية، تحدث عضو الكونجرس كيث اليسون مع عدد من الصحفيين المصريين في حوار عبر الفيديو بعنوان "المشاركة السياسية للمسلمين في الولايات المتحدة" يوم الثلاثاء الموافق 6 مايو 2008. حضر اللقاء 40 صحفيا شاركوا في الحوار مع اليسون حول التنظيم والقيادة في المنظمات الإسلامية الأمريكية واتجاهات المسلمين في الانتخابات الرئاسية الأمريكية ووجهة نظر عضو الكونجرس بشأن العلاقات الثنائية بين البلدين. تمت دعوة النائب اليسون إلى الحوار بصفته أول مسلم أمريكي يلتحق بالكونجرس، في حدث تم تغطيته حينئذ على نطاق واسع من جانب الإعلام المصري.

وقد أوضح النائب اليسون خلال اللقاء أن مسلمي امريكا لا يواجهون أية عقبات تحول دون المشاركة الكاملة في الحياة السياسية، كما أشار إلى أهمية الدور الذي تلعبه مصر في المنطقة.

As part of the Embassy’s “Road to the White House” election program, Congressman Keith Ellison spoke to Egyptian journalists in a video conference on May 6 on the topic of Muslim-American political participation. Forty journalists attended and engaged with Congressman Ellison in a wide-ranging dialogue on Muslim-American political organization and leadership, Muslim-American preferences in the U.S. presidential elections, and the Congressman’s own views on the bilateral relationship. Congressman Ellison was invited to the video conference because he is the first Muslim-American to be elected to the U.S. Congress, an event which was widely covered in Egypt. Among the issues that Congressman Ellison raised were that Muslim-Americans face no barriers to full participation in the American political process and the importance of Egypt in the region.
