شكرا جزيلا. صباح الخير.
إنني أقدّر دعوتي إلى هنا للتحدث إليكم. سوف أجعل خطابي قصيرا، نظرا لوجود الكثير من المتحدثين المتميزين والكثيرين ممن لديهم أفكار يطرحونها. فأنا أعتقد أن تبادل الأفكار هو الفائدة العظمى لمثل هذه الاجتماعات.

إن موضوع هذا الحدث هو الأنشطة الخيرية للمؤسسات، وهدفنا هو تبادل خبرات المؤسسات الخاصة الناجحة في الولايات المتحدة مع نظيراتها في مصر. في الأعوام السابقة، أدركت المزيد من الحكومات على مستوى العالم قيمة المساهمة في الجهود الإنسانية من جانب القطاع الخاص. وقد غيرت هذه الجهود الخريطة الاجتماعية والاقتصادية للكثير من الدول، وأسهمت في التنمية المستدامة رغم المناخ الاقتصادي غير المستقر حالياً.

كما أود أن أركز على أحد عوامل التنمية المستدامة، ألا وهو المشاركة الاقتصادية للمرأة. واليوم توضح دراسات البنك الدولي والمنظمات الأخرى ما أدركناه نحن المتواجدين داخل هذه القاعة منذ فترة طويلة، وهو أن مشاركة المرأة في المشروعات والاقتصاد هامة جدا للنمو الاقتصادي والتنمية في أية دولة. لهذا، فإنه من الضروري أن نستمر في بناء قدرة المرأة في بلادنا وفي جميع أنحاء العالم وإمدادها بالمهارات والأدوات اللازمة لزيادة قدرتها على المساهمة.

ويرجع الفضل مرة أخرى إلى المساهمة الكبيرة والجهد المبذول من قادة الأعمال أمثالكم في تنمية التجارة الثنائية بيننا وتحقيق أعلى مستويات التعاون والشراكة. لقد توسعت العلاقات الاقتصادية والتجارية وتنوعت في السنوات الأخيرة بفضل جهودكم الملحوظة. لقد لعبتم دورا هاما في إنجازات مصر الاقتصادية في الأعوام الأخيرة، وساهمتم في خلق أحد أسرع الاقتصادات نموا في العالم.

ربما تكون التجارة اليوم أهم أوجه العلاقات الاقتصادية المصرية الأمريكية. فقد زاد حجم التجارة الثنائية بين مصر والولايات المتحدة عن 88 مليار دولار في الفترة من 1985 حتى 2007.

إننا نواجه اليوم بالطبع تحدي ضمان أن تنتشر فوائد التجارة والتوسع الاقتصادي كي تشارك كل فئات المجتمع في هذه الإصلاحات وتستفيد منها.

أعتقد أننا نتفق على أن النمو الاقتصادي الذي لا يشمل الكثيرين هو نمو غير مستدام. إننا نؤمن بأن النمو الاقتصادي المستدام يرتبط ويعتمد على النمو السياسي والاجتماعي المستدام، كما أنه يتطلب نشر ثقافة الابتكار والمسئولية الاجتماعية للمؤسسات.

في الولايات المتحدة، وفي إطار نظام اقتصاد السوق، تزداد ثقتنا يوماً بعد يوم بأن الابتكار في المشروعات الاقتصادية له أثر عظيم في إثراء الناس. إن ثقافة الأعمال الابتكارية هي ثقافة تبنى فيها الشبكات وتنمى فيها العلاقات القائمة على الثقة، كما يقوم المساهمون بتشجيع أصحاب الأعمال المبتكرين على بناء مشروعاتهم. وعن طريق هذا ينشأ الإحساس بأهمية العطاء ورد الجميل كما تنشأ ثقافة الرغبة في فعل الصواب وإيجاد بيئة ذات هدف. وتعد رابطة التنمية والتطوير الشامل للمرأة (أوتاد) نموذجا لهذا المناخ في مصر.

كما يسعدني أن يعمل اثنان من أكبر المستثمرين الأمريكيين في مصر ، وهما مؤسستاApache و ExxonMobil على تطوير التعليم وفرص العمل للبنات والسيدات عن طريق برامج المسئولية الاجتماعية. تعمل Apache مع المجلس القومي للطفولة والأمومة على بناء مدارس الفصل الواحد للبنات في المناطق الريفية التي لم يسبق أن تواجدت فيها شبكات تعليمية رسمية. وتقدم ExxonMobil التدريب والفرص لزيادة عدد السيدات في المناصب القيادية في الشركة.

لا يمكن لأحد أن يحتكر الأفكار الجيدة في مجال بناء القدرات. إن مثل هذه اللقاءات التي تجمع الأمريكيين والمصريين معا لتبادل الرؤى والخبرات هامة للغاية. أريد أن أشكر سفراء Vital Voices ، فريدا باس وجودي ميلر ونينا جاردنر على المشاركة في البرنامج. إن معرفتكم الجماعية في مجالات المسئولية الاجتماعية للمؤسسات والعمل الخيري المؤسسي لا تقدر بثمن، وأنا أعلم أن هذه المعرفة سيتم إثراؤها بإسهامات المشاركين المصريين.

كما أتوجه بالشكر لرابطة التنمية والتطوير الشامل للمرأة (أوتاد) على استضافة هذا الحدث كجزء من عضويتها في شبكة سيدات أعمال الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا. وتعد الشبكة شراكة بين منظمات سيدات الأعمال المحلية في العالم العربي وVital Voices Global Partnership ومبادرة الشراكة الشرق أوسطية ووزارة الخارجية الأمريكية. وتسهل الشبكة تبادل الآراء والخبرات في المنطقة وزيادة القدرات الجماعية لمنظمات سيدات الأعمال على تشكيل دور المرأة في المشروعات والمناصب القيادية.

وختاماً، أود أن أشكر جميع السادة الحضور على اهتمامهم بالعمل الخيري المؤسسي. أنا واثقة أنكم ستغادرون هذا المكان بعلاقات وأفكار جديدة سوف تدعم شركاتكم ومجتمعاتكم. أتمنى أن تواصلوا المشاركة في رابطة التنمية والتطوير الشامل للمرأة وشبكة سيدات أعمال الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا.

Thank you very much. Good morning.

I really appreciate being invited here to talk to you. I’ll keep my remarks brief because there are many people here with ideas to share and many distinguished speakers and I think the exchange of ideas is the greatest value in meetings such as this.

The subject of this event is Corporate Philanthropy and our goal is to exchange the experiences of successful private and corporate foundations in the US with those here in Egypt. In recent years, more and more governments around the world are recognizing the valuable contribution provided through philanthropic efforts from both the corporate and private sector. These efforts have changed the economic and social map of many countries, contributing to sustainable growth despite the current volatile economic climate.

I would also like to highlight one of the major determinants of sustainable growth, and that is women’s economic participation. Today, studies from the World Bank and other organizations show what I think many of us in this room have recognized for a long time: women’s participation in business and the economy is crucial to the economic growth and development of any country. Therefore, it is vital that we continue to build women’s capacity in our own countries and around the world and provide them with the skills and tools to maximize their potential to contribute.

Again, thanks to the enormous contribution and dedicated effort of business leaders such as you our bilateral trade grows and we enjoy an unprecedented level of cooperation and partnership. Trade and economic relations have significantly diversified and expanded in recent years through your remarkable efforts. You have played a significant part in Egypt’s economic accomplishments in recent years, creating one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

Trade is now perhaps the most important aspect of Egyptian-U.S. economic relations. Between 1985 and 2007, the U.S. and Egypt conducted bilateral trade amounting to more than 88 billion dollars.

We now face the challenge, of course, of ensuring that the blessings of trade and economic expansion spread more broadly so that all members of society have a stake in -- and benefit from -- these reforms.

I think we agree that economic growth that leaves out many people is not sustainable. We believe that sustainable economic growth is related to and dependent upon sustainable political and social growth. It also requires the growth of cultures of entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibility.

In the US, with our market economy, we are finding more and more that entrepreneurship has a greater impact than just making people rich. An entrepreneurial culture is one in which networks are built, trusting relationships are developed, the entrepreneurs are supported by groups of stakeholders who help them build their businesses. Along the way, a sense of the importance of giving back is developed as is a culture of wanting to do “what’s right” or to create an environment that has a greater sense of purpose. The Association for Women’s Total Advancement and Development (AWTAD) is a perfect example of this sensibility here in Egypt.

I am also pleased to recognize that two of the largest U.S. investors in Egypt, the Apache Corporation and ExxonMobil, are working to improve education and employment prospects for girls and women through their corporate social responsibility programs. Apache works with the National Council on Childhood and Motherhood to build and staff “One Room Schools” for girls in rural areas that previously had no formal education networks. ExxonMobil provides training and networking opportunities to increase the number of women in managerial positions throughout its company.

No one has a monopoly on good ideas for capacity building. Events like this that bring Americans and Egyptians together to share their insights and experience are critical. I want to thank the Corporate Ambassadors from Vital Voices: Freda Bass, Judy Miller and Nina Gardner for their participation in this program. Your collective knowledge in the areas of corporate social responsibility and corporate philanthropy is invaluable and I know it will only be enriched by the contributions of the Egyptian panelists.

I also want to thank the Association for Women’s Total Advancement and Development (AWTAD) for hosting this event as part of their membership in the Middle East North Africa Businesswomen’s Network. The Network is a partnership between local businesswomen's organizations across the Arab world, Vital Voices Global Partnership and the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) of the U.S. Department of State. It facilitates exchanges like this one and others throughout the region and leverages the collective energy of businesswomen's organizations to shape the role of women in business and leadership positions.

Finally, I want to thank everyone in attendance for your interest in and commitment to corporate philanthropy. I am confident that you will leave this event with new contacts and innovative ideas that will strengthen your companies, businesses and community. I hope that you continue your involvement in AWTAD and the MENA Businesswomen’s Network.
