Marie and I are delighted to welcome you here on such a beautiful evening, on such an important day in America’s history, and in surroundings that so eloquently evoke Egypt’s own rich past.

Today we celebrate the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration expresses convictions that we continue to hold after more than 200 years – that all human beings are created equal, that they possess basic rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness; and that it is the responsibility of government to protect these rights. Simple ideas that changed the world.

These ideas of liberty and democracy are not only the founding principles of America. They are the cornerstone of our foreign policy.

As President Bush has said, “From the day of our Founding, we have proclaimed that every man and woman on this earth has rights, and dignity, and matchless value. Advancing these ideals is the mission that created our Nation. It is the honorable achievement of our fathers. Now it is… the calling of our time.”

The United States stands with Egypt as it answers its own citizens’ aspirations call to establish their own form of democracy and to protect the rights and dignity of every Egyptian citizen.

As an American, I am optimistic about the future of Egypt, the Egyptian people and American-Egyptian relations.

Thank you for joining us tonight in celebrating the freedom and independence of the United States of America. Let us also celebrate the friendship between the U.S. and Egypt and the many other countries represented here.

I wish especially to thank the Minister of Culture, Dr. Farouk Hosny, for allowing us to use this beautiful and historic site for our celebration. Thanks also to all of the fine American companies who helped sponsor our celebrations this evening.

بمناسبة الاحتفال بعيد الاستقلال

السادة الوزراء،

السادة المحافظين،

الزملاء الأعزاء من الهيئات الدبلوماسية،

سيداتي وسادتي .. ضيوفنا الأعزاء،

يُسعدني أنا وماري أن نُرحِب بكم هنا في هذه الأمسية الجميلة. ويسرُنا أن نكون معكم في هذا المساء الجميل، في هذا اليوم الهام في تاريخ أمريكا وفي هذا المكان الزاخر بتاريخِ مصر العريق.

نحتفل اليوم بذكرى "إعلان الاستقلال"، حيث يُعبّر "الإعلان" عن مبادِئ لا زِلنا نتَمسَكُ بها بعد مرور 200 عام – إن جميع البشر خُلِقوا سواسية وأن لهُم حُقوقاً أساسيّة في الحياة والحرية والسعي لِلسعادة وأنّ حِماية هذه الحُقوق هي مسئوليةُ الحكومة. إنها أفكارُ بسيطة ولكنها غيّرت العالم.

هذه الأفكار الخاصة بالحُريّة والديمُقراطية لا تُمثِل فقَط المبادِئ التي تأسّست عليها أمريكا بل هي المِحوَر الأساسي لسياستِنا الخارجِيّة.

وكما قال الرئيس بوش "مُنذ اليوم الذي تأسّست فيه بلدُنا، أعلنّا أن لكُل رجُلٍ وامرأةٍ على وجه هذه الأرض حقُوقاً وكرامةً وقيمةً لا تُضَاهى. إنّ دعم هذه القِيَم المِثالية هي المُهمة التي خُلِقَت أُمتّنا من أجلِها. إنهُ إنجاز أبائِنا الذي نفخَر به. وهو الآن ... النِداءُ العاجِل في وقتِنا الحالي."

إن الوِلاياتِ المتحدة تقِف بِجوار مِصر في الوقت الذي تسعى خلاله مصر إلى تلبّية طموحات مواطنيها ذاتهم ونداءاتهم لبناء الديمُقراطية التي تُناسِبهم وإلى حِماية حقوق كُل مواطن مِصري وصَونِ كرامتِه.

كأمريكي، أنا مُتفاءِل بِمُستقبل مِصر والشعب المصري والعلاقات الأمريكية المصرية.

شُكراً لمُشاركتِكُم لنا الليلة في احتِفالِنا بالحُرية واستِقلالِ الولاياتِ المُتحدة الأمريكية. وأدعوكم أيضاً للاحتِفال بالصداقةِ التي تربُط الولايات المُتحدة والدول العديدة المُمَثّلة هُنا.

وأود أن أشكر بصفة خاصة السيد وزير الثقافة، الدكتور فاروق حسني لموافقته على استضافتنا لهذا الحفل في هذا المكان الجميل. شكراً أيضاً لكل الشركات الأمريكية الرائعة التي ساعدت في رعاية احتفالنا هذا المساء.
