مرحبا بكم فى السفارة وأشكركم على الحضور اليوم. أرحب بعضو الكونجرس أليسون ونائب مساعد وزير الخارجية ألينا رومانوسكي وشركائنا فى مؤسسة آرتس ميدويست والمشاركين المصريين فى مبادرة القراءة الكبرى.

أعتقد أننا جميعنا نعلم أن هدف مبادرة القراءة الكبرى هو جمع الناس للمشاركة بثقافتهم ومعرفة المزيد عن بعضهم البعض. طُرحت مبادرة القراءة الكبرى بين مصر والولايات المتحدة بمعرفة المؤسسة القومية للمنح الأدبية والفنون ووزارة الخارجية الأمريكية بالتعاون مع مؤسسة آرتس ميدويست ومركز المتاحف والمكتبات وأيضا الشركاء المصريين وهم المؤسسة المصرية للموارد التعليمية ومكتبة الإسكندرية والجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة.

واليوم نجتمع مع جميع المشاركين فى المبادرة، وآمل ألا تكون المرة الأخيرة التي نجتمع فيها سويا. أهنئكم على كل البرامج التي نفذتموها حتى الآن بدءا من المحاضرات التي أقامتها مؤسسة الموارد التعليمية حول الكتب المختلفة ثم إفتتاح مبادرة القراءة الكبرى فى مكتبة الإسكندرية وصولا لنشاط الجامعة الأمريكية مع مؤسسة "عالم أفضل" وطلاب من مختلف الجامعات المصرية فى القاهرة. أرحب بكم جميعا.

اليوم حالفنا الحظ فى وجود عضو الكونجرس كيث أليسون معنا من مينيسوتا. أشكرك سيادة العضو. شكرا جزيلا للمشاركة فى هذا اللقاء عبر الفيديو وأنا أتطلع الى الإستماع الى حديثك عن مبادرة القراءة الكبرى والثلاث كلاسيكيات الأدب الأمريكى وهم "عناقيد الغضب" للكاتب جون ستاينبك و"فهرنهايت 451" للكاتب راي برادبيرى و"قتل طائر مغرد" للكاتب هاربر لي.

ولكننا اليوم نأخذ مبادرة القراءة الكبرى كنموذج للتحدث عما هو أكثر بكثير من الكتب. اليوم هو يوم تفاعل المصريين والأمريكيين إعتمادا على المصالح المشتركة والإحترام المتبادل كما قال الرئيس أوباما. إننا بلدان عريقتان لديهما تراث أدبي عظيم، وأنا آمل اليوم أن نكتشف أرضية مشتركة فى هذين التراثين وأن نستخدم هذه الأرضية لتوسيع قاعدة الحوار بين شعبينا.

Welcome to the Embassy and thank you for coming today. Welcome to Congressman Ellison, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of State Alina Romanowski, Arts Midwest partners and Egyptian participants in the Big Read.

I think we all know that the purpose of the Big Read is to bring people together to share cultures and learn more about each other. The Big Read Egypt/U.S. is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts and the U.S. Department of State, in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest, along with our Egyptian partners, the Egyptian Association for Educational Resources, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and American University in Cairo.

Today, we have gathered with us participants of the Big Read from all of our partners. I truly hope it won’t be the last time we all meet together. I congratulate you for all of the programs that you have been implementing so far, from e-ERA’s panels on the various books, to the BA’s Big Launch to AUC’s work with Better World and students from various universities throughout Cairo. Welcome everyone!

Today we are so fortunate to have with us Congressman Keith Ellison from Minnesota. Congressman Ellison, thank you so much for participating in this video conference. I look forward to hearing you speak about the Big Read and the three classics of American literature, Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

But like the Big Read program, today is about much more than books. It is about Egyptians and American engagement based on mutual interest and mutual respect, in the words of President Obama. We are two great countries with two great literary traditions. I hope today we will discover the common ground in our traditions and use it expand a dialogue between our peoples.
