السيدة سوزان مبارك .. الرئيس أرنولد .. رئيس مجلس الإدارة هايت .. السادة الضيوف وأعضاء هيئة التدريس والموظفين والطلبة .. إنه لشرف عظيم أن أنضم إليكم اليوم للاحتفال بافتتاح الحرم الجديد للجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة.

أنا على يقين بأنه لو كان تشارليز واتسون - المؤسس والرئيس الأول للجامعة الأمريكية - معنا اليوم لأصبح فخورا للغاية. فقد بدأ حلمه بجامعة قائمة على مستوٍ عالٍ من الإدارة والتعليم عام 1919 ب 142 طالبا . اليوم، وبمرور تسعين عاما، هناك أكثر من 5550 طالب – منهم حوالي ألف طالب من خارج مصر – في هذا الحرم الجميل. لقد أصبحت جامعتكم إحدى أعظم المؤسسات الأكاديمية في مصر والمنطقة والتي تساهم في النمو الفكري وتكوين القادة في هذا البلد والعالم.

إن الجامعة الأمريكية ليست مجرد جامعة رائدة، فقد أصبحت أيضا جسرا هاما بين الشرق والغرب، كما أنها موطن لأساتذة وعاملين من مختلف الثقافات. كما تجذب الجامعة الأمريكية الطلبة من جميع أنحاء العالم، فهي تضم عددا من الطلبة الأمريكيين أكبر من أية جامعة أخرى في المنطقة. وحتى في أوقات الصراع في المنطقة، ظلت الجامعة الأمريكية دائما منارة مضيئة حيث أنتج التبادل الثقافي والسياسي والاجتماعي والأكاديمي حوارا بناء وساعد على زيادة تقارب شعوب بلادنا مع بعضها البعض.

إن هذا الدور الهام هو الذي أدى إلى تأييد الشعب الأمريكي للجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة. فعلى مدار العشرين عاما الماضية ، قدمت الحكومة الأمريكية من خلال برنامج المعونة حوالي 270 مليون دولار لتأمين مرافق الجامعة وزيادة المنح الدراسية وتوسيع المكتبات وإنشاء هذا الحرم الجديد. إن هذا الحرم الجامعي إضافة هائلة لمصر، كما أنه سيساعد على النمو المستمر لهذه المؤسسة. إننا فخورون بشراكتكم، كما نتطلع إلى استمرار التعاون بيننا.

يمكنكم الثقة في أننا سنظل مؤيدين وداعمين لكم على استمرار النمو، خاصة في جهودكم لجعل الدراسة في هذه الجامعة أكثر إتاحة لعدد أكبر من الطلبة في مصر والشرق الأوسط. إن برنامجي منحة الجامعة الأمريكية للقطاع العام ومنحة المعونة الأمريكية للقيادة في التنمية والتعليم (برنامج LEAD ( من البرامج التي تساعد الجامعة على تحقيق هذا التحدي. لقد بدأنا شراكة برنامج القيادة في التنمية والتعليم معكم عام 2004، وفي كل عام يلتحق طالب وطالبة من كل محافظة في مصر بالجامعة الأمريكية حيث يقوم البرنامج بتمويل دراستهم. و حتى الآن، استفاد 270 طالب من البرنامج.

ولكننا جميعا نستفيد من هذا البرنامج على المدى البعيد. فهؤلاء الطلبة لديهم التزام ملحوظ بمجتمعاتهم ووطنهم، وهم يكتسبون في الجامعة الأمريكية المعرفة والخبرات القيادية التي تمكنهم من تحويل هذا الالتزام إلى خدمات من أجل التنمية البشرية والتقدم المجتمعي على مدى الحياة.

إننا – مصر والولايات المتحدة – في أمس الحاجة إلى ريادتهم. في العقود الماضية، تمكنت الثورات في مجال الاتصالات وتكنولوجيا المعلومات من كسر الحواجز التي اعتادت أن تفصل بين البلدان والأسواق، مما أدى إلى خلق اقتصاد عالمي واحد أكثر تكاملا من ذي قبل. في هذا الاقتصاد، يمكن للشركات أن تضع الوظائف حيثما تتواجد شبكة الإنترنت، كما يذهب رأس المال إلى الفكرة الأفضل حيثما كانت. ففي عالمنا المتصل ، لم يعد الأمر يقتصر على مجرد التغيير، بل على سرعة هذا التغيير.

إن المتطلبات الجديدة لعالمنا الجديد ترفع من أهمية التعليم. إننا نحتاج إلى أن يحصل قادة المستقبل على تجارب ثقافية أكثر تنوعا. إننا نحتاج أن نكسبهم نطاقا أوسع من الخبرات التي تمكنهم من التعامل مع المشكلات التي لا تعترف بالقادة المحليين. إننا نحتاج منهم أن يتواصلوا مع نظرائهم حول العالم. إننا نحتاج قادة يسعون إلى فهم بعضهم البعض. وأخيرا، وربما يكون الأكثر أهمية، إننا نحتاج إلى قادة مكرسين لخلق احترام حقيقي بين بعضهم البعض لو أننا سنعمل سويا على تسخير قوى التغيير هذه من أجل الخير الأعظم.

إن هذا تحديدا هو موضع أهمية الجامعة الأمريكية والبرامج على شاكلة برنامج القيادة في التنمية والتعليم. وهذا أيضا هو سبب تفاؤلي بمستقبل شراكتنا مع الجامعة الأمريكية وشراكتنا كدولتين. إنني متفائلة لأنني أعلم أن اهتمامكم بالتميز الأكاديمي والتفاهم الدولي سيساعدكم على بناء الاحترام المتبادل الذي نحتاج إليه بين الولايات المتحدة والشرق الأوسط.

كما إنني لست وحدي من يمتلك هذه الثقة. فلي الشرف الكبير أن أنقل إليكم رسالة شخصية من رجل أتى والده إلى الولايات المتحدة – كالكثير من المهاجرين – عبر المحيط سعيا وراء شهادة جامعية، من رجل قال: "إن السبب الوحيد وراء ما وصلت إليه اليوم هو أن هذا البلد الذي أحب قد منحني فرصة التعليم" وأن سبب سعيه إلى الرئاسة كان "لكي أمنح ذلك الطفل، الذي أضيئ خياله بعجائب الإنترنت، الفرصة ليصبح بيل جاتس القادم".

أرسل إليكم اليوم تهانئي بالاحتفال بهذه العلامة في تاريخ الجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة. يمثل افتتاح الحرم الجديد بداية عهد جديد لواحدة من أعظم المؤسسات الأكاديمية بالشرق الأوسط، وعهد جديد في الشراكة المصرية الأمريكية التي يرمز إليها تاريخ هذه الجامعة.

على مدار 90 عاما، قام المصريون والأمريكيون بالدراسة وإجراء البحوث معا، فاكتشفوا أهدافا ومبادئ مشتركة في تراثهم وتطلعاتهم المتنوعة. وبهذا الحرم الجديد، سيستفيد المزيد من الشباب بهذه الخبرات التعليمية الفريدة، حيث تتوافر لهم الإمكانيات ذات المستويات العالمية والتعليم الإبداعي الذي يبني العلم والفهم اللازمين لتطوير حياتنا جميعا.

إن لي شرف تأكيد اهتمام الشعب الأمريكي باعتباره شريك وصديق لكم بهذا الجهد. فأنا أفعل هذا إيمانا بأن عملنا معا هام وضروري. وكمصريين وأمريكيين ذوي خلفيات واعتقادات وفلسفات متباينة، يمكننا وينبغي علينا التمتع بعلاقة حميمة وبناءة. يمكننا وينبغي علينا أن نعمل من أجل أهداف ومصالح مشتركة. يمكننا وينبغي علينا أن نعمل معا من أجل السلام وفرص التعليم الأفضل لأبنائنا والفرص الأكثر للجميع.

لذا، فدعونا نتأمل كلمات الرئيس اليوم كما نتأثر بالعقول العظيمة الماثلة أمامنا في الجامعة الأمريكية، دعونا نكرم هذا الحرم الجامعي الجديد الرائع عن طريق التعهد بربط شراكتنا وتفاؤلنا وتنوعنا لخلق مستقبل طويل ملئ بالرخاء والسلام.

Your Excellency Mrs. Mubarak, President Arnold, Chairman Hight, distinguished guests, faculty, staff and students, it is my great honor to join you today to celebrate the opening of the new campus of the American University in Cairo.

I am sure that Charles Watson, the founder and first president of AUC, would be very proud today. His vision of a university based on high standards of conduct and scholarship began in 1919 with 142 students. Today, ninety years later, there are more than 5,550 students – including nearly one thousand from outside of Egypt -- on this beautiful campus. You have become one of the preeminent academic institutions in Egypt and the region, contributing to the intellectual growth and character of leaders in this country and around the world.

AUC is more than just a leading university. It is has also become a vital bridge between East and West. It is home to a multicultural faculty and staff. It attracts students from around the world, including more American students than at any other school in the region. Even during times when the region was tense with conflict, AUC has always been a beacon of light where open academic, social, political and cultural exchange has produced constructive dialogue and brought the people of our countries closer together.

It is because of this important role that the American people are strong supporters of AUC. Over the past twenty years, the U.S. government, through USAID, has provided some $270 million dollars to secure the school’s endowment, increase scholarship programs, expand libraries and construct this new campus. This campus is a tremendous asset for Egypt and it will set the pace for the continued growth of this institution. We are proud to be your partner and look forward to our continued work together.

You can be assured that we will always be your advocate and supporter as you continue to grow, especially in your efforts to make the university more accessible to more students throughout Egypt and the Middle East. AUC’s public sector scholarship program and USAID’s Leadership for Education and Development Scholarship Program, or LEAD, are among those programs helping AUC to meet this challenge. We began the LEAD partnership with you in 2004. Each year, two students, one male and one female, from each governorate in Egypt has been admitted to AUC and supported in their studies by LEAD program scholarships. So far, 270 students have benefited from the program.

But we ALL are the long term beneficiaries of this program. These students have a remarkable commitment to their communities and their country. While here at AUC, they gain the knowledge and the leadership experience to turn that commitment into a lifetime of service to social progress and human development.

We – Egypt and the U.S. -- need their leadership urgently. In recent decades, revolutions in communications and information technology have broken down barriers that once kept countries and markets apart, creating a single, global economy that is more integrated than ever before. In this economy, companies can plant their jobs wherever there’s an internet connection, and the capital goes to the best idea – wherever that may be. In our interconnected world, it is no longer a question of whether things are going to change. It is a matter of how fast.

The new demands of our new world raise the importance of education. We need our future leaders to be diverse and to have a diverse educational experience. We need them to bring a broad range of experience to bear on the problems that don’t recognize national borders. We need them to collaborate with counterparts around the world. We need leaders who seek to understand each other. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, we need leaders who are dedicated to developing a true respect for each other if we are going to effectively work together to harness these forces of change for the greater good.

This is precisely where AUC and programs like LEAD are essential. And it is also why I am optimistic about the future of our partnership with AUC and about our partnership as nations. I am optimistic because I know that your commitment to academic excellence and international understanding will help build the mutual respect between the United States and the Middle East that we need.

I am also not alone in this conviction. I have the distinct honor of conveying to you a personal message from a man whose own father was drawn to the U.S.– like so many immigrants – across an ocean in search of a college degree. A man who has said “the only reason I am where I am today is because this country I love gave me the chance at an education” and that his reason for running for president was “to give the child out there whose imagination has been sparked by the wonders of the internet the chance to become the next Bill Gates.”

It is my great honor to share with you a message from President Barack Obama.

Dear Friends:

Today I send you my congratulations as you celebrate a milestone in the history of the American University in Cairo. The opening of a new campus marks the beginning of a new era for one of the Middle East’s great academic institutions, and a new era for the Egyptian-United States partnership that is symbolized by the history of this University.

For ninety years, Americans and Egyptians have studied and researched together, discovering a common purpose and shared values in their diverse heritage and aspirations. With a new campus, more young people will benefit from this unique educational experience. They will have access to world-class facilities and innovative teaching that will produce the science and understanding to improve all of our lives.

I am honored to affirm the commitment of the American people as your partner and friend in this endeavor. I do so with the belief that our work together is vital and necessary. As Americans and Egyptians representing many different backgrounds, philosophies and faiths, we can and should enjoy a productive and close relationship. We can and should work toward common goals and interests. Together, we can and should work for peace, better educational opportunities for our children, and more opportunities for all.
