شكراً جزيلاً لكم. كل سنة وانتم طيبين. شكراً جزيلاً د/ حسن نادير لوجودك معنا هنا اليوم ليس فقط لتوقيع الاتفاقية وهو ما قمنا به فى مكتبكم اليوم ولكن أيضاً لكلمتكم الممتازة التي ألقيتموها باللغة الإنجليزية والحقيقة أني لا أجرؤ على التحدث بالعربية بعد كلمتكم الجميلة بالإنجليزية. فأنا أتمنى لو أني أتحدث العربية بنفس الطلاقة التي تتحدث بها الإنجليزية. شكراً أيضاً لسيادة المحافظ لبيب الذي كان معنا صباح اليوم في حفل توقيع الاتفاقية والذي يشارك الآن في الزيارة المرتقبة للرئيس مبارك. ويشرفنا أن يكون معنا اليوم الدكتورة/ نينا فيدروف المستشارة العلمية الجديدة لوزيرة الخارجية الأمريكية لشئون الوكالة الأمريكية للتنمية الدولية. أهلا بك يا دكتورة فى هذا الحفل ومأدبة الغذاء التي نحضرها اليوم. لقد جاءت الدكتورة/ فيدروف كما جئت أنا وزوجتي ماري ريتشاردوني للاحتفال بمرور خمس سنوات على افتتاح مكتبة الإسكندرية، وهو حدث له أهمية خاصة تتوافق مع الهدف من لقائنا على مأدبة الغذاء اليوم ألا وهو إعادة انطلاق الإسكندرية كمركز عصري للعلم والمعرفة ونقطة التقاء عالمية في جميع هذه المجالات كما كانت دائما في الماضي. هذا الهدف لا يتحقق فقط من خلال مكتبة الإسكندرية بل أيضاً من خلال ما نشهده اليوم من نهضة في جامعة الإسكندرية تحت قيادة الكفاءات العديدة التي التقيت بها هذا الصباح من عمداء الكليات والدكتور حسن نادير. أنا على ثقة أنكم فخورين بزملائكم وطلابكم – هؤلاء الطلاب الصغار الأذكياء والمتحمسين بتعليقاتهم وأسئلتهم. لقد استمتعت فعلاً بلقائهم.
نحتفل اليوم بخطوة جديدة في الشراكة الأمريكية المصرية في مجالات التعليم والعلوم والتكنولوجيا من خلال توقيع هذه الاتفاقية بين جامعة إنديانا وكلية الحقوق بجامعة الإسكندرية. هذا شيء جديد لنا. إنه جزء من منهج عصري مستمر بين الولايات المتحدة ومصر لنساعد في مجال التنمية الاقتصادية ولكنه أمر مختلف عما قمنا به في السابق. فقد ركزنا في الماضي على تشييد البنية الأساسية ومساعدة المصريين في شق الطرق وبناء محطات الكهرباء وأنظمة الهاتف ومشروعات المياه والصرف. ولازلنا نقوم بمثل هذا الجهد ولكن تركيز الحكومة المصرية والمؤسسات المصرية العظيمة كجامعة الإسكندرية يتجه الآن نحو الاستثمار في البشر وبناء البنية الأساسية البشرية التي تحتاجها مصر للانطلاق ولتحتل المكانة التي تستحقها بين الأمم العظيمة. وبالعودة إلى جامعة إنديانا والاتفاقية التى وقعناها اليوم فإننا نركز على مساعدة مصر لأننا نحب أصدقائنا وشركائنا ونود أن نراهم أقوياء ومزدهرين في الوقت ذاته. إننا نعتقد أنه مع تراجع احتياج مصر للمساعدات فإن ما سيحل محلها – وما يجب فعلاً أن يحل محلها – هو زيادة التجارة وزيادة القدرة على التنافس على المستوى العالمي. وجامعة الإسكندرية تبرهن أنها قادرة على التوافق مع المعايير العالمية فيما يتعلق بالعلوم والتكنولوجيا. لقد عدنا قبل قليل من زيارة لبعض المعامل الجامعية المتخصصة في تطوير وزراعة الأنسجة البشرية. ومن خلال التعاون مع جامعة إنديانا في مجال القانون التجاري فسنتمكن من تدعيم قدرة مصر على المنافسة في مجالات التجارة والاستثمار بالإضافة إلى تدعيم سيادة القانون والشفافية في الأنشطة الاقتصادية في مصر. وبالطبع سيشرح لكم الأستاذ العميد الفولي والأستاذ إيمرت تفاصيل ذلك ولكن بالنسبة لنا فهذا يتعلق بموضوع أتحدث عنه دائماً. فأنا أفاجئ حينما أجد مصريين يشعرون بالقلق تجاه المستقبل وذلك لأننا نشعر بالثقة مما نسمعه منكم وما سمعناه من كلمات الدكتور نادير. هناك ثقة يتحدث عنها كل من يتعامل مع الشباب المصري. أنتم تنظرون إلى المستقبل. أنتم لا تركنون الى أمجاد مصر السابقة أو مشاكل الماضي والحاضر ولكنكم تنظرون إلى المستقبل. هذه الثقة تجعلني متفائلاً لمصر. ولذلك فإني أشجع أصدقائي المصريين حينما ألتقي بهم وأقول لهم "لتثقوا بأنفسكم كما نثق نحن بكم" . نحن على ثقة تامة أن لمصر مستقبل رائع لأن بشر مثلكم – علماء ومعلمين، رجال ونساء قانون وتعليم – يقومون بكل ما يجب القيام به. ولمن يتولون التدريس في جامعة الإسكندرية فلديكم مائة وستين ألف طالب لتعلموهم كل عام. هناك عشرين ألف عضو هيئة تدريس وبطريقة ما تنجحون فيما تقومون به. أنتم تدفعون مصر إلى الأمام وترفعون من قدرتها على التنافس على المستوى العالمي. أنا لدي ثقة كبيرة في مصر ومستقبلها. أنا واثق في مستقبل الشراكة التعليمية المصرية الأمريكية في القانون والعلوم والتكنولوجيا وفي جميع هذه المجالات. فهذا في اعتقادي هو ما سينقذنا، وما سينقذ حضارتنا من القوى التي تريد جذبنا إلى الخلف وتنشر العنف والجهل. لذا، مبروك لكم جميعاً. مبروك لجامعة الإسكندرية وجامعة إنديانا. ألف مبروك وأطيب أمنياتي لكم للمستقبل. حظ موفق وكل سنة وانتم طيبين.

Thank you very much. Kol Sana wa entom taybeen Dr. Hassan Nadeer, thank you very much for not only being here today for the purpose that we’re here, which is the agreement we’ve signed this morning in your office, but thank you also for your very excellent words in English, and I don’t dare speak in Arabic after your beautiful presentation in English. I wish I could speak Arabic as you speak English. We also thank Governor Labib, who was with us this morning for the signing ceremony and is now attending to the visit of President Mubarak in just a short while. We have the privilege today of having with us Dr. Nina Federoff, who is the new Science Advisor to the Secretary of State for USAID, and we welcome you, Doctor, to this ceremony today and this lunch. Dr. Federoff is here, as I am and my wife Marie Ricciardone, to celebrate five years of the opening of the Bibliotheca Alexandria, a particularly important event that goes to the purpose of today’s lunch -- and that is Alexandria’s re-emergence as a modern center of learning in science and knowledge and a worldwide networking point in all of those fields. Just as it was in ancient times, so today it is becoming with not only the Bibliotheca but with, I think, a renaissance we are seeing in Alexandria University under the very capable faculty that I met this morning, all the deans and Dr. Hassan Nadeer. I’m sure you’re very proud of your colleagues and your students -- those bright, exciting, young students with their comments and their questions. I really enjoyed them.
We’re marking today a new step forward in American and Egyptian partnership in education and science and technology with the signing of this agreement between Indiana University and Alexandria University School of Law. This is something new for us. It’s part of an ongoing modern tradition between the United States and Egypt of our assistance in the field of economic development, but it’s something different from what we had done before. In the past we had concentrated on building the infrastructure, helping the Egyptians build their roads, power plants, telephone systems, water, and waste water. We still do a certain amount of that, but now the focus of the Government of Egypt and the great institutions of Egypt, like Alexandria University, is on investment and people, in building the human infrastructure that Egypt really needs to take off and be where it should be in the great family of nations. Coming back to Indiana University and the agreement here, we have a focus on helping Egypt develop because we like our friends, our partners, to be strong and also prosperous at the same time. We believe that as Egypt’s need for economic assistance diminishes, what is coming to take its place -- and should come to take its place -- is increased trade, increased ability to compete on the world stage. Alexandria University is showing how it can have world standards in science and technology – we just came from one of your laboratories, the tissue development and implantation laboratory. With the cooperation of Indiana University in the field of commercial law, you’ll be strengthening Egypt’s ability to compete for trade and investment, as well as increasing the strength of the rule of law and the transparency of doing business in Egypt. Of course, Dean Al-Fouli and Professor Emmert will explain how that all works but for us it all goes to something that I speak about all the time. It always surprises me when I find Egyptians who are a bit anxious about the future because we hear, as we did in the words of President Nadeer, confidence from some of you. Confidence from all of you who are working with Egyptian youth, you look to the future. You don’t rest on the glories of Egypt’s past or the troubles of the past and the present, but look into the future. That confidence makes me optimistic about Egypt. So I always urge my Egyptian friends when I see them -- I say “Have confidence in yourself as we have confidence in you.” We are completely confident that Egypt has a bright future because people like you – scientists, educators, men and women of law, and of education – are doing all the right thing, and for those of you who are teaching in Alexandria University, you have a hundred sixty thousand students to educate everyday. Twenty thousand faculty members and somehow you make it all work, and you’re pulling Egypt forward, and you’re making Egypt more competitive on the world stage. I’m very confident about Egypt and its future. I’m confident about the future of the Egyptian-American partnership in education, in law, in science and technology, and in all those fields. It is what I believe will save us, will save our civilization against the forces that are trying to hold us all back, introducing violence and ignorance. So, congratulations to all of you. Congratulations to Alexandria University, to Indiana University, Alf Mabrouk and best wishes of all kinds in the future. Best of luck. Kol Sana wa entom taybeen and good luck.
